Family Insurance has been offering our Auto and Home insurance products in B.C. for over a decade. Family Insurance is a Vancouver based member of The Economical Insurance Group. The function of the Junior Underwriter is to provide detailed underwriting and risk analysis for Family Insurances’ personal line products. Underwriters respond to product/procedural questions from other underwriters and brokers. They provide guidance for complex new business, participate in post-loss underwriting reviews, and review claim referral cases in accordance with the Company’s philosophy. The Junior Underwriter shares responsibility for risk selection, rating, and customer service with brokers and partners.
This position will support Family’s extended hours initiative with hours operating from 10am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 8:00am to 4:00pm on Saturdays. The shift rotation will be communicated as business needs require it.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Accept, reject, endorse, renew or cancel contracts following company underwriting policies/procedures, applicable laws and regulations, subject to authority level as specified by underwriting manager.
• Answer inquiries and make recommendations to brokers through verbal and written correspondence. Respond to broker inquiries, concerns and complaints on underwriting decisions and escalate when appropriate.
• Proficient in the use and knowledge of the Family’s Point of Sale system. Guide and directing brokers on the use of the functional application of Family’s Point of Sale System.
• Develop and manage relationships with assigned group of brokers to develop a stable and profitable book of business. Ensure a profit/loss ratio according to the business plan established for the department.
• Understand and communicate underwriting business rules and guidelines both internally and with brokers.
• Participate in post-loss underwriting reviews and review of claim referral cases in accordance with Company’s philosophy.
• Train brokers on underwriting matters of a complex nature
• Participate in departmental projects

• Ability to solve problems by gathering and reviewing information that is readily available. Must be able to make special efforts to search for information and select the best solution or course of action.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of the Underwriting team. The individual must be reliable and dependable, working with minimal supervisrion
• Effective communication to explain and discuss complex information so that other individual(s) can understand it.
Qualifications:
• 1-2 years experience as a auto underwriter or auto broker
• Strong computer skills specifically in MS Office tools. – must be able to produce concise and useful reports
• CIP designation or actively pursuing a CIP designation with completion of courses or equivalent.
